Real-Time Telemetry Data Improves Decision Making and Installation Efficiency
Ashtead Technology is a leading provider of equipment rental solutions, advanced underwater technologies and support services to the offshore energy sector. Ashtead recognises the importance of adding value for customers by integrating technology to enhance existing solutions.
"Our initial project proved that LUMA modems integrated with our data management systems can reduce risk and add value on various subsea monitoring applications where real-time data access is critical. We recognise this added value and are integrating the modems as standard within our AMS+/DMS subsea construction monitoring systems for future projects." Ross McLeod, Technical Director, Ashtead Technology
AT A GLANCE
During the installation of subsea structures equipped with Ashtead’s Autonomous Monitoring System (AMS+) or Deflection Monitoring System (DMS), having access to real-time telemetry data expedites decision-making and improves installation efficiency. Traditionally, structure telemetry during installation is output using underwater display units which rely on good visibility for ROV sight, and effective onboard communications between parties.
Telemetry data has also been output using acoustic modems, however this technology provides a fraction of the bandwidth and uses significantly more power than optical alternatives. Acoustic modems also often fail due to the thruster noise and interference.
THE SOLUTION
In order to gain access to this real-time telemetry data, Ashtead integrated Hydromea’s high-speed subsea communication technology, LUMA 250LP modems as standard in each AMS+ / DMS. Use of LUMA technology allows fast and reliable remote communication of heading, pitch, roll and other essential data via ROV systems to the construction vessel.
“Its low-power capability and high-speed of data transfer puts LUMA as an absolute winner in wireless data transfer. It proves to be a much better alternative to acoustics and underwater displays, contributing to improved accuracy and speed, which is of tremendous value during complex construction projects.” PHILIP STRETTLE-BROWN Chief Surveyor, Rever Offshore
BENEFITS
Efficient Installations
Integration of LUMA 250LP technology can improve deployment time by several hours per installation, reducing in-field time for costly construction support vessels.
